MOBILE
CHEMOTHERAPY
Providing healthcare in remote areas in the UK can require alternative methods of delivery. The mobile chemotherapy service was created in association with NHS Yorkshire to provide a different way for chemotherapy patients to receive their treatment.
The service is broken into parts: one for the patients, the other for the nurses who deliver the service. These both work in tandem.
The first is an app for the patients. Based of their location they can use an SMS service to contact other people who are receiving treatment in their area. This can be used to set up a car share arrangement that follows a pre-established route created by the patients. This reduces the stress of getting to the hospital and also gives patients the chance to develop a support network.
The second component is for the nurses who travel and deliver the treatment. North Yorkshire is split up into five areas in which a fleet of cars work, traveling to patient’s homes to deliver treatment. The app includes their schedule, directions and checklists for each stage of the process. There is also a facility to update the HUB on their progress.
